We've put together a 5-day itinerary covering some of Transylvania's most beautiful destinations, starting in Bucharest and finishing in Sibiu.
Let's explore Romania!

Begin your journey in Romania's capital before heading towards the mountains.

Explore the historic Old Town, known as Lipscani, with its charming streets, cafés and restaurants.
Don't miss the impressive Palace of Parliament, one of the largest administrative buildings in the world, and Cărturești Carusel, a beautiful bookshop housed in a restored historic building.
Finish your day with a walk along Calea Victoriei and enjoy your first traditional Romanian dinner.
Overnight: Bucharest
Day 2 – Peleș Castle and Cantacuzino Castle: Two Architectural Masterpieces
Leave Bucharest behind and head north towards the Carpathian Mountains.
Stop 1: Peleș Castle
Located in Sinaia, Peleș Castle is one of Romania's most spectacular royal residences.

Built for King Carol I in the late nineteenth century, this fairytale castle is surrounded by beautiful forests and mountain scenery.
Inside, discover magnificent halls, intricate woodwork, stained glass and richly decorated rooms.

Take your time exploring the castle and its gardens before continuing your journey.
Stop 2: Cantacuzino Castle
Continue towards Bușteni and visit Cantacuzino Castle, another architectural masterpiece dating back to 1911.
Its elegant interiors, beautiful stained glass and spectacular views of the Bucegi Mountains make it a fantastic stop.
You might also recognise it as Nevermore Academy from Netflix's Wednesday!

After your visit, continue towards Brașov, where you'll spend the next two nights.
Overnight: Brașov
Day 3 – Bran Castle and Medieval Brașov
Today is all about history, architecture and a little mystery.
Morning: Bran Castle – The Legend of Dracula
Approximately 30 kilometres from Brașov, Bran Castle is one of Romania's most famous attractions.
Perched dramatically on a rocky hill, the castle looks like something straight out of a gothic fairytale.

It is popularly known as Dracula's Castle, thanks to its association with Bram Stoker's famous vampire novel.
However, there's an interesting distinction: Dracula is fictional, while his historical inspiration is often associated with Vlad III, also known as Vlad the Impaler, a fifteenth-century ruler of Wallachia.
There is no definitive evidence that Vlad lived at Bran Castle, but its mysterious atmosphere certainly makes it the perfect setting for the legend.
Explore its historic rooms, narrow staircases and courtyards before returning to Brașov.
Afternoon: Discover Brașov
Spend the afternoon exploring the beautiful medieval city.

Start at Piața Sfatului, the colourful main square, before visiting the impressive Gothic Black Church.
Continue towards Strada Sforii, one of the narrowest streets in Europe, and Catherine's Gate, a beautiful surviving medieval entrance.
If you have time, head towards Mount Tâmpa for spectacular panoramic views over the city.
In the evening, enjoy traditional Romanian food in the historic centre.
Overnight: Brașov
Day 4 – Sighișoara: Step Into a Medieval Fairytale
Leave Brașov and travel towards Sighișoara, one of Europe's best-preserved medieval towns.
Its historic citadel is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for colourful houses, cobbled streets and impressive medieval towers.

Don't miss:
- The Clock Tower: The city's most recognisable landmark, offering beautiful panoramic views.
- The Covered Staircase: A charming wooden staircase connecting the lower town with the Church on the Hill.

- The Church on the Hill: An impressive Gothic church overlooking the citadel.
- Vlad the Impaler's House: Traditionally identified as the birthplace of the historical figure associated with the Dracula legend.
Take your time exploring the narrow streets, discovering hidden corners and enjoying the unique medieval atmosphere.
Our recommendation? Stay overnight inside or close to the historic citadel. Once the day visitors leave, Sighișoara becomes even more magical.
Overnight: Sighișoara
Day 5 – Sibiu: The Perfect Ending to Your Transylvanian Adventure
For your final day, head towards Sibiu, another beautiful historic city shaped by its Saxon heritage.
Known for its colourful buildings and distinctive rooftops with small windows resembling eyes, Sibiu has a unique atmosphere.

What to See in Sibiu
Piața Mare – The Grand Square
Start in the city's main square, surrounded by impressive historic buildings, cafés and restaurants.
Piața Mică – The Small Square
Explore this charming square filled with beautiful architecture and picturesque streets.
The Bridge of Lies
One of Sibiu's most famous landmarks. According to local folklore, the bridge will collapse if someone tells a lie while standing on it!
The Council Tower
Climb to the top for beautiful panoramic views over the city's historic rooftops.
If you have some extra time, visit the ASTRA Museum, an impressive open-air museum showcasing traditional Romanian houses, wooden churches and rural architecture.
And just like that, your Transylvanian road trip comes to an end!
When Is the Best Time to Visit Transylvania?
Transylvania is beautiful throughout the year, but we'd particularly recommend spring and autumn.
- Spring (April–June): Green landscapes, pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds.
- Summer (July–August): Longer days, perfect for exploring castles and mountain scenery.
- Autumn (September–October): Golden forests, atmospheric castles and spectacular photography opportunities.
- Winter (November–March): Snow-covered landscapes and magical Christmas markets, particularly in Brașov and Sibiu.
Practical Tips for Your Transylvania Road Trip
Rent a car: Having your own vehicle makes exploring Transylvania much easier, particularly when visiting attractions outside the main cities.
Allow extra driving time: Traffic around Bucharest, Sinaia and Brașov can be heavy, especially during weekends and holidays.
Book castle tickets in advance: Peleș and Bran are popular attractions, so check opening days and ticket availability before travelling.
Wear comfortable shoes: Medieval towns are full of cobbled streets, stairs and uneven surfaces.
Don't rush: Five days will give you a fantastic introduction to Transylvania, but there's plenty more to discover if you have additional time.
One important detail: This itinerary finishes in Sibiu rather than returning to Bucharest. Allow an additional travel day if you need to return to the capital for your flight.
